The Group - Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck

Gänsheidestr. 26

70184 Stuttgart

Georg von Holtzbrinck founded the Hausbücherei in Stuttgart in 1948. This was the core of the Verlagsgruppe, which later grew into the major book club Deutscher Bücherbund. The acquisition of S. Fischer in the 1960's as well as investments in companies such as Rowohlt, Droemer, Kindler, the Saarbrücker Zeitung, Handelsblatt and Die Zeit (between the years 1969 and 1971) led to the formation of the holding, the Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck GmbH, in 1971. The following years brought further investments in the book and newspaper divisions. In the mid 1980's the company began expanding into the overseas English-speaking markets, first in the United States and then by means of the acquisition of a majority share in Macmillan in the mid 1990's. This last investment has increased the Verlagsgruppe holdings to include the British commonwealth countries, as well as markets in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Company Principles

Since its formation in 1971, the Verlagsgruppe has adhered to and continued to develop a set of principles, which form the guidelines of all strategic and operative business. These principles include conviction to producing high-quality products, which appeal to a sophisticated target group, maintaining a winning edge without letting quality suffer or putting long-term stability at risk, solid financing, which ensures the independence of the family business and strong controls on the family's financial demands and influence of the run of business.

The Verlagsgruppe's management philosophy is that of a decentralized holding with a limited hierarchy. Therefore, the subsidiaries have the benefit of being led by an "employer on location," as well as the advantages of a mid-sized company's flexibility and the financial resources and know-how of a major force in the industry.

With over 80 networked companies in the group and a substantial international presence, the Verlagsgruppe is one of the largest German media organizations.

The Verlagsgruppe is made up of five divisions, which are the basis of a secure, yet forward-thinking business:

Fiction and Non-Fiction

Education and Science

Business Information

National Newspapers

Regional Newspapers and Printing

The Macmillan Group's (aka Macmillan Publishers Ltd) extraordinarily strong revenue performance and its wide variety of publications have earned it success, not only in the Fiction and Non-Fiction divisions, but also within the Education and Science branches.

Electronic Media

The Electronic Media have penetrated more and more of the "traditional" corporate divisions, and have thereby transformed them. Therefore, management of this division must be conducted in a partially centralized, partially decentralized manner, depending on the individual company. In the electronic products segment, the Verlagsgruppe is one of the market leaders. For some time now, one of its main goals has been to provide its customers with content, in as many different forms as possible.

Publishing Services

There are currently three companies operating under the Verlagsgruppe umbrella, which supply some rather diverse service functions for the holding, its subsidiaries and more and more for third parties as well.
