Reed Elsevier
The Reed Elsevier Group plc was created by a 1993 merger between the British publishing company, Reed International P.L.C. and the Dutch publishing company, Elsevier N.V.
They are a publisher of information for professional users. They currently have four operating divisions that produce more than 15,000 different magazines, books, CD ROMs and internet based data and information services. Their divisions are focused on four major market sectors, each of which is global:
A money-making success for them has been ScienceDirect, an example of a Digital Library of the Future that provides access to research journals, abstract databases and reference works. And, according to their earnings report (Reed Elsevier 2003 preliminary results), as stated: "For2004, we plan to increase our investment programme yet further. This will drive the expansion of our online information products and services to address the burgeoning demand of our customers for the additional productivity that professional information and web-based functionalities can bring. We also continue to target acquisitions that accelerate our growth strategy." And, as to method of payment, "There has been much written recently on scientific journal business models. We remain firmly of the view that, whilst the market will always accommodate a variety of different initiatives and funding approaches, subscription based journal publishing is the most effective and efficient way to deliver to researchers a huge volume of high quality, peer reviewed research through increasingly sophisticated online delivery and navigational tools that require substantial investment. We will however continue to monitor initiatives such as the "author pays" publishing model and assess how effectively they serve the needs of the scientific and research communities. Where innovations bring demonstrable and sustainable improvements for these communities, Elsevier will, as always, adapt and invest accordingly."
The second largest international publisher and information provider was instantly created by the European buyout specialists, Cinven and Candover, when they decided to merge their January, 2003 purchase of Kluwer Academic Publishers (which gave them their initial position in the scientific, technical and medical ("STM") market) with their September, 2003 purchase of BertelsmannSpringer.
Springer Science+Business Media
Cinven's strategy statement on its website summarizes these purchases as being "based primarily on reaping merger benefits between the two businesses. More specifically, we have appointed a leading management team in the industry, will realise significant synergies from the integration of both STM businesses, will continue to drive top line growth in STM via profitable online sales from an enlarged product database, and re-position Springer's professional publishing arm for growth ahead of any cyclical upturn in the future."
Headquarters - Springer Science+Business Media
From the time it was founded in 1842 up until the end of the Second World War, Springer-Verlag had two established offices in the centre of Berlin: from 1858 to 1911 on Monbijouplatz and from 1911 to 1948 on Linkstrasse. Two thirds of the building were destroyed during air raids. The alternative premises found in Berlin's Dahlem district were seized by the Americans in August 1945.
