1. Eugene Power founded University Microfilms (later known as UMI) in 1938 to preserve scholarly works in the British Museum on film. The result was our first (and only) product that year: Early English Books, the ongoing microfilm edition of the earliest works printed in the English language. The next year saw the first issue of Microfilm Abstracts, the forerunner of Dissertation Abstracts, with 15 dissertations from five universities.

Today, as a result of agreements with more than 8,500 publishers worldwide, ProQuest Information and Learning now provides access to information from periodicals, newspapers, out-of-print books, dissertations, and scholarly collections in various formats. We employ more than 1,100 people in our world headquarters in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and offices in Louisville, Kentucky; Cambridge, England; Salt Lake City, Utah; Stamford, Connecticut; and Toronto, Ontario.

ProQuest Company's (then Bell & Howell) acquisition of UMI (now ProQuest Information and Learning) in 1985 propelled the company's expansion into electronic access products, first with CD-ROM products, and most recently, with the Web-based ProQuest information service, currently available to millions of higher education, K-12, and public library users globally.

Virtually every scholar, past or present, is familiar with Dissertation Abstracts, our record of more than 1.5 million doctoral dissertations and master's theses from the United States, Canada and the Pacific Rim.

In 1998, the Library of Congress named our ongoing dissertation collection the official U.S. offsite repository for dissertations and theses in electronic format. This marks the first time the Library of Congress has chosen a third party to house one of its digital collections.

But dissertations are just one small part of ProQuest Information and Learning's collection. Today our archive includes more than 5.5 billion pages of information, spanning 500 years of scholarship, in formats that range from print to microform to digital.

The company's XanEdu division provides electronic learning support materials for college students. Professors use XanEdu resources to create online CoursePacks, a unique way to provide comprehensive, up-to-date information packets to supplement other educational materials. Students access CoursePacks via the Web and download information as needed.
