After working in public and special libraries from 1957 I joined an information retrieval research project at Cranfield in 1963, researching afterwards at Cornell University, and began research at Aberystwyth in 1967. My research and teaching areas have covered most aspects of information retrieval, especially indexing, vocabulary control, searching, printed index design, text retrieval software evaluation and laboratory evaluation test methods. I was a Reader in Information Science until September 1996. I am a Fellow of both the Library Association and the Institute of Information Scientists. I have authored or co-authored 68 publications.

My last funded research was into ranked output retrieval, comparing performance with Boolean, and designing a novel interactive system which offers multiple match options. I also worked for a year on one of the E-Lib (electronic libraries) projects known as newsAgent, designing an electronic current awareness service for library staff. In a private capacity I keep updated a website for an index to theological periodicals as well as distributing the index by email and diskette; and I also maintain a well-visited church/bookshop site.
