Purposes of the Clearinghouse
Raise consumers' awareness of how technology affects personal privacy.
Empower consumers to take action to control their own personal information by providing practical tips on privacy protection.
Respond to specific privacy-related complaints from consumers and, when appropriate, refer them to the proper organizations for further assistance.
Document the nature of consumers' concerns about privacy in reports and make them available to policymakers, industry representatives and consumer advocates.
Advocate for consumers' privacy rights in local, state, and federal public policy proceedings, including legislative testimony, regulatory agency hearings, task forces, and study commissions as well as conferences and workshops. Read our testimony and presentations in the "Speeches & Testimony" section of our Web site, www.privacyrights.org/ar/
To learn More About Us, visit this section of the Web site. In brief, the PRC is a nonprofit consumer information, research, and advocacy program, based in San Diego, California. We were established in 1992 at the University of San Diego Center for Public Interest Law. Since 1996 we have been a program of the Utility Consumers' Action Network (UCAN).
Our Fact Sheets provide practical tips on safeguarding personal privacy. They also explain the public policy environment surrounding a variety of informational privacy issues and indicate where consumers do and do not have legal protection. Topics covered include Internet privacy, identity theft, telemarketing, junk mail, medical records, workplace privacy and many more. Fact sheets are also available in Spanish. Please check our New Postings section to learn of new and updated fact sheets.
Our Speeches & Testimony offer a more in-depth look at current privacy policy issues from a consumer advocacy perspective. When the PRC participates in policy debates -- by testifying in legislative committee hearings, participating in regulatory proceedings, and making presentations at conferences -- we often post our formal comments on this section of the Web site. You can check out our most recent speeches and testimony in the New Postings section.
The Identity Theft Resources section reflects the many years we have provided assistance and direction to victims of this crime. We provide information for victims on how to recover from identity theft (Fact Sheet 17a), as well as information on how to avoid becoming a victim. We invite victims to tell their own stories. And we discuss the causes of and solutions to this epidemic crime.
In the Privacy Links section, we present a broad range of links to the Web sites of privacy advocates, publications, academicians, and numerous other resources.
The Consumers Speak Out section reveals just a few of the many privacy abuses that have come to our attention. If you would like to share your story, contact us at www.privacyrights.org/inquiryform.html. The PRC welcomes well-written stories that illustrate privacy problems facing consumers today. You may post your story anonymously.
